Can TRT reduce the risk of heart disease?

Research would suggest that treating the male andropause with hormone optimisation therapy is proven to improve quality of life in males undergoing treatment. Men have reported feeling more ‘normal’ and ‘getting their old life back’ again after starting testosterone replacement therapy.

Symptoms such as fatigue, low libido, irritability, brain fog, weight gain and loss of muscle mass and reduced bone density are greatly improved; but there is now consolidative evidence that not only does treatment of male andropause improve quality of life, but it may improve longevity of life too!

Andropause is a natural age-related decline in testosterone and growth hormone levels in men, with a decrease in testosterone causing a plethora of symptoms and conditions.

One such condition linked to the male andropause is that of cardiovascular disease. This was first reported in the early 2000s discussing a link between andropause and increased cardiovascular risk and occurrence of cardiovascular events. As treatment for the male andropause (such as testosterone replacement therapy) is becoming more globally accepted, so is the research in this field.

Ajayi, et al. (2024) report that an increase in cardiac problems and mortality corresponds to a reduction in testosterone levels in the male andropause. A significant prevalence of testosterone deficiency has been found in men with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and men with low testosterone levels tend to accumulate more visceral fat, likely due to andropause effects.

As a male androgen hormone, testosterone has various anabolic and catabolic effects. As an anabolic hormone, testosterone can help reduce visceral fat build up by increasing androgen receptors, initiating a lipolytic process and increasing lean body mass. On the contrary to this, it has been observed that lower testosterone levels in men is related to an increase in lean muscle wastage and a shift in the storing of fat from under the skin to around the abdomen (visceral).

In conclusion, the male andropause is associated with substantially higher risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and; therefore, detecting low testosterone levels in men presenting with andropause symptoms offers a fantastic opportunity to improve the quality of life and unlock the potential for longevity.
