Frequently Asked Questions
What is the male andropause?
The male andropause describes the age-related decrease in male hormone levels. The current evidence-based thinking is that these hormones should be maintained at your bodies optimum level rather than allowing it to decline naturally over time. Testosterone is usually solely blamed for the andropause symptoms; however, it is important to remember that there are many other hormones which can come into play with ageing.
Common symptoms of the male andropause are:
mood swings and irritability
hair loss
loss of muscle mass and reduced ability to exercise
fat redistribution, such as developing a larger waist or "man boobs" (gynaecomastia)
a general lack of enthusiasm or energy
difficulty sleeping (insomnia) or increased tiredness
poor concentration and short-term memory
What is hormone optimisation therapy?
Hormone optimisation therapy assesses whether hormone levels in the body are below the desirable threshold and; if so, to treat this by developing a plan to improve hormone function by using bio-identical and synthesised hormones to restore your optimal balance. The treatment plans can include topical creams and sprays, capsules and injections, depending on your preference. It is important to remember that although testosterone plays an important factor, other hormones are also measured and optimised!
When will I see improvements?
As each individual is unique, so is each clients journey to hormone optimisation. It greatly depends on which symptoms you want to treat, with some clients reporting they can feel the immediate benefits. Full hormone optimisation may take up to six months.
What are the other benefits?
Not only may you feel the reversal of symptoms as described above, there is increasing evidence that having optimised hormones can reduce your risk of many diseases, such as prostate cancer, heart disease and high cholesterol.
